I had the pleasure of being interviewed by the incredibly talented @nickonken for his podcast. We talked about therapy, self awareness, relationships, entrepreneurship, my process behind how I use @instagram, and SO much more. The interview is out now and the link for it is in my story.
As Nick and I were chatting, we started discussing the value of taking care of the self in order to live a vibrant and fulfilling life. We mentioned quotes like “you can’t pour from an empty cup” or “you can’t give to others what you haven’t given to yourself.” And then I shared a quote a client of mine once said in a session. He shared that an older gentleman once was giving him advice and said “after me, you come first.” I was struck by this in session and have kept the quote written on a sticky note on a desk in my office ever since.
It’s true, isn’t it? That we must take care of ourselves (don’t confuse this with selfishness) before we can ever fully show up for others. It’s like the oxygen masks in airplanes. Put yours on first before you put on another’s; you’re of no use if you run out of oxygen before you put on either.
After me, you come first. That spot, the one right after me, is the most special spot in this world. It’s the person or people who receive the greatest and most gifted love. Once I take care of me, I can take care of you SO much better. This is not about whether to put others first or not. This is about being at our best so that what we give to those in the “after me” spot is out of this world and fills them up more than if we abandoned ourselves and always put others ahead at the expense of ourselves. Think on it. #mindfulmft #nionlife
